Georgia O’Keefe lived in a house of windows. every view was a landscape, every corner a still life. the gardens of Abiquiu are watered only on mondays. for hundreds of years and still, to this day, for two hours in the early morning the headgates of the Rio Chama Acequia are lifted and the ground swells with water and plants float like rice patties in their rows. one of these gardens is famous because Georgia O’keefe dug in this dirt, as the nuns did before her, and because when she wasn’t tending this earth her hands made paintings that made the world take notice of her, the house and the garden. i am lucky to have visited this garden, this house, her studio – even her closet. and i am changed for it. this was a woman committed to quality, to nature, to work. each item in her adobe has a function and a beauty, almost intimidatingly so, in its exacting presence.
